Escape the New Year Resolution Trap - Think Early, Think Smart

My friend Teresa has been a bit upset this week. She came across her 2008 New Year Resolutions list and found that she’s not able to tick a single item off it.

With just a few weeks remaining before the new New Year, she’s glum that she’s “still a fat, shy, frumpy wino with an ex-boyfriend tied to her with elastic, stressing about a job she has been dying to leave since she started it 6 years ago.” Her words, not mine!

Teresa has been making resolutions each year to lose weight, drink less, get a new job and go out more. But these resolutions do not see the light of day because in her mind they are simply hopeful wishes - ones that she feels would be “nice to have” but they’re not really for “someone like her”.

So she doesn’t take them seriously. And when we don’t take something seriously, we can’t commit to it. And when we can’t commit to it, we become unable to identify with it in a way that brings about the right mental energy to make it happen.
If this doesn’t make sense, think about what happens in your mind when you want something easy - like a cup of tea. You might say “Mmmm, I don’t half fancy a nice cup of tea” and picture a nice hot brew. Perhaps you feel its comforting warmth on your tongue. Maybe you hear the comforting boil of the kettle. Without even knowing it, you’ve put a lot of energy and commitment into this simple thought about wanting a cup of tea. This energy and commitment is what allowed you to do what it took to make that cup of tea happen.

How can you allow yourself to think about your goals with the same level of familiarity and ease with which you think about a cup of tea?

1) Envision Success.

See yourself achieving your goal on the TV screen of your mind. Have this on constant replay, even if you have to set reminders on your mobile phone to do it.

2) Address the emotional conflict underlying your goal.

Many goals involve a loss (lose weight, lose the drink, lose a habit, quit smoking, stop procrastinating). Loss brings apathy, grief, abandonment and insecurity. If you find these emotions casting a subconscious veil around your goal, a solutions-orientated therapist can help you with this.

3) Take committed action.

Goals without action are daydreams. Daydreams have a beauty that gives your life hope. But daydreams rooted in fear take the hope away and you get distorted self-limiting and self-depreciating beliefs forming in their place instead. Action with commitment addresses fear and gives legs to your daydreams.

Teresa’s decided she won’t be starting 2009 with her same old dog-eared list of guilt-ridden resolutions. She’s not that bothered about her weight really but she is ever-so-tired of being socially shy and awkward. Teresa started working on her confidence and self-esteem today.

The Right Place For Your Goal Setting

Just like for companies, goal setting for your own life is very important for success. When many folks try goal setting for the first time, it can be an overwhelming task. Sometimes, this activity cannot be done in one sitting. It may require a few sessions. You might find that you will have to do some soul searching to figure out what goals you really want to accomplish in life. This will determine what success means for you. Then you need to plan out your strategies to achieve this success.

All of this can be a lot of work so you need to be in the right place for your planning. You need to be in a place where you can really focus on your thoughts, just like studying. For me, one of the best places to do this is during a long flight, say at least two hours or more. If the in-flight movie is boring and if the other passengers sitting around are not very social, then I’m trapped. There’s nothing do to but listen to the plane’s white noise. So it’s an ideal place for me to work on my planning because I can really focus in such an environment. Of course, I can’t book a long flight every time I want to work on my personal goal setting. But next time you’re on a long flight, you might want to do some of this type of activity or at least review your goals.

Sometimes, I can’t do this activity at home either. I have little dogs that can be very distracting and I just can’t get any work done that requires heavy-duty thinking. If they are not barking at something they see out the window, then they are tapping my arm with their paws to get my attention while I’m working. Although this might seem like a really cute thing to see, it is very annoying when trying to plan and set goals which are so important.

When faced with constant interruptions, I have to leave the house and go to a private study room at a local library where I always manage to get good work done. You might have young children, a needy spouse or a chatty roommate. They can all be distractions that you don’t need when planning your goals. You will have to figure out for yourself where the best planning environment is for you.

Don’t short change yourself by trying to plan out your success in an unsuitable environment. You don’t want to do a quick mediocre job with such an important task that will have such a huge impact on your life. You want to make the best use of your time as possible to help you succeed. You also want to have a pretty clear mind when you attempt any such activity. Go to a place where you can put in an honest brain sweat. The proper goal setting and planning are crucial activities that are considered essential for overall success in life.

Goal Setting Theory to Help You Set Goals

Goal setting is one of the keys to success. It is effective because it deals with how the mind works. The theory behind goal setting is, tricking the mind to believe in future results.

Some of the aspects of goal setting is followed:

1) When you set a goal, you are telling your mind to do something. You are consciously giving a command to your mind. Your mind will try to figure out anything you tell it to.

2) Your mind wants to close open loops. When you tell yourself to do something that you haven’t already achieved. Your mind tries to figure out how to do it.

3) If you tell yourself something long enough, your mind believes you’ve already done what it is you set out to do. If you tell yourself you want to be healthy. You will begin to believe you are a healthy person.

This will make you believe you are someone or something else. You will believe you are a certain way, and in order to stay congruent to the person you think you are, you will do things that, that person would do.

If you believe you are a healthy person, you will not eat fatty foods. Because a healthy person does not eat fatty foods.

4) If you ask yourself the same questions, your mind will actively seek the answer. You will have actively your minds Reticular Activation System (RAS).

Your Reticular Activation System is the filter in between your conscious mind, and everything around you in your environment.

You see that any given second, there are thousands of variables in the environment that you can concentrate on. You can concentrate on how the air smells, how the seat fells. Your ankle pains, your headache. Noises outside, and on and on and on.

Without our RAS you will go crazy, because the mind will have information overload. What you do when you set your goals is to activate your RAS. It will look for the things that will help you get your goals.

The Trap of Sticking Vs Quitting

Are you facing a decision about a goal you’ve deiced to go after? Are considering if you should quite or stick it out? Then you’ll probably find this article helpful.

NOTE: It’s probably helpful if you print this out for ease and future reference.

Before I get to meat of the information I’d like to set some definitions first:

Sticking:
The conscious awareness of the mental resistance as one enters the “quitting zone.” Then using mental strength, moves through this resistance towards a self prioritized SMART goal.

Quitting:
The unconscious reaction to the mental resistance as one moves towards their goal and hits the “quitting zone” and quits.

Goal:
To become aware of importance and priority of a goal and the mental resistance that will be encountered in obtaining it. Quit the unimportant stuff…stick with the important stuff…know the difference and have the guts to do one or the other.

Key Words: Conscious awareness

Similarity: Commitment vs. Trying

The Meat:
There’s an old saying ‘winners never quit, and quitters never win.’

Every new goal starts out exciting and fun. Then as time progress it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point where it gets really hard and the excitement and fun is gone.

When the fun and excitement are gone people will then get easily distracted, procrastinating and asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. They are most likely in the “quitting zone” or as Seth Godin describe it as “The Dip.” The Dip is a temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. Or it also could be a dead end, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

Achieving goals often requires a person to quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt until they commit to beating the ‘right’ Dip for the right reasons. In fact, successful goal achievers seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it.

Those that don’t achieve their goals on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. They fail to stick out the Dip, they get to the moment of truth and then give up, or they never even find the right Dip for the right reason to conquer.

This model will assist you in achieving their goals and sharpen your ability to determine if the goal is “the right goal” and to recognize and escape dead ends quickly. Using this method will also keep you focused and motivated when it really counts.

Applying the Model:
There are a few key factors when using the model.

  1. Determine the importance or priority of the goal. If the goal feels like to it ‘would be nice’ to obtain, the probability of success if minimal. However if the goal has a burning desire behind it, then success is more likely. The key again here is to discern the difference between the two.
  2. Decide under what circumstance you are willing to quite, write is down, then stick to it. If there is no intention on reaching the goal, quite before you begin. Remember, quitting is not the same as failing, and there is no failure, only feedback.
  3. Seven reasons (excuses) for quitting
    1. Run out of time
    2. Run out of money
    3. Get scared
    4. Not serious
    5. Lose interest or enthusiasm
    6. Focus on short term instead of long term and quite when the short term gets too hard
    7. Pick the wrong goal
  4. Three questions to ask before quitting
    1. Am I panicking?
    2. Who am I trying to impress?
    3. What sort of measurable progress am I making?
  5. Once the goal priority is established and you are determined to see it through, expect and look forward to the Dip. This is where mental strength and coaching are essential. As you dance more and more in the Dip and breakthrough the other side, your confidence will develop. So, the more you succeed the more you grow, the more you grow the bigger the Dip you can handle and the more “success” you will achieve.

Tools:
To help resolve if the selected goal has enough “juice” two tools can be used. The first is simply a question:

Tool #1:
“Why put your energy into this goal and not something else?”
After asking the question…listen. Listen to the tone, tempo, energy, etc of the response, and then follow-up as required.

Step 1.
Fill in your top 5 Goals - No need to prioritize them

Using the numbers from the list above, compare each goal to every other goal. In each line in the columns below circle the number of the goal that is more important to you at this time.

Making Lemonade: Starting a Business After Ending A Career

What do you do when the money tree starts sprouting lemons?

It’s increasingly common these days to find middle-aged, mid-level managers suddenly faced with huge shifts of circumstance. Down-sizing, bubble-bursting, plant-closing, and consolidating are just some of the forces creating a class of sudden solo-preneurs.

At 50-something you face particularly difficult job-hunting challenges. Your salary range is high. Your network is decent after so many years, but jobs at your level are few. You’ve been there, done that, and thought you were finished with all that new trick-learning.

A big upset like job loss can provide a shift of perspective - an opportunity to take stock. What is really important? What do you want to pursue at this point in your life? Is being your own boss the way to go?

I spoke with several silverbacks to share their wisdom gleaned from these life changes with a new member of the pack.

Dean turned 50 in January of 2005. In May he was fired from his position as marketing director of a high-tech firm. He’s angry at the ease with which an employer could let him go.

“Control is a big issue for me. Do I really want to have someone tell what, where, and how? It seems like I work a lot but don’t reap the benefits. If I were on my own I’d have all the benefits and all the risks.”

Dean is deciding whether to find another job with the security of a regular paycheck and benefits, or start his own business. He finds information on the internet helpful but wishes there was a Big Brother-like program pairing people and businesses to help him sort through the options.

Carl was 51 when the ordinance plant where he was safety manager closed its doors.

“I had a lot of friends in the business. I could have easily picked up another job but I would have had to relocate halfway across the country. I didn’t want to do that.”

Bob was an engineer whose position was eliminated after 23 years with the firm. This sent him into a deep depression that lasted for months.

“I couldn’t even drive.”

With the help of his psychiatrist, Bob recognized what was most important in his life-his wife, his son, and his lifelong hobby, bird-watching.

“My doctor told me to go bird-watching every day. While out there on the wetlands I had a vision. I couldn’t go back to the corporate life.”

It takes a lot of stamina and belief in yourself to move ahead with plans for a business. Carl spoke of his state of mind at the time:

“I wasn’t frightened. I’m a survivor. I screwed up when I was younger- went bankrupt, lost a lot of material things. One good thing about failing is that it gets you over that fear of failure. You learn from your mistakes.”

Both men did a lot of research, internal and external. Bob determined that he loved birds, kids, nature, education, photography, and the environment. Anything he pursued needed to involve those. Once he was clear on the essentials the how-to landed in Bob’s lap.

“I saw an ad in a magazine to call for franchise information. My mind immediately took off with the possibilities. I began looking at retail spaces thinking ‘I wonder how that location would work?’ I saw the ad on a Saturday. That Tuesday I called the company. On Thursday I had the package and on the following Tuesday they had it back.”

Carl was taking his time, looking at options. His values included a love of people and a desire to create a positive environment.
His plans started with casual conversation.

“My buddies owned this building. There had been a restaurant there years ago but it had been mismanaged. And somehow the idea of starting another one came up. At first we were clowning around, yucking it up over a few beers, but then we started getting more serious.

Bob made use of the infant, but still helpful internet of 1995. Carl used lower tech methods to estimate his market.

I spent 15 days from 4:00 am to 11:00 am counting cars at that intersection. I figured if we could get a big enough percentage of them to stop we’d be in business.

Bob used a book called, The Insider’s Guide to Franchising [Webster, B. 1986 Amacom, New York] to help him review his offer. Carl was mentored by a successful friend in the restaurant business who helped him think things through. They developed their business plans and opened their doors.

The first year was tough for both businesses. Miscalculations and errors sent both owners reeling.

At first Carl knew nothing about preparing and serving food.

“The restaurant was overstaffed and overpaid. I felt held hostage by the people who worked for me. Things were pretty shaky there for awhile. Some days I wondered if we could open the doors.”

Bob got overwhelmed with paperwork and screwed up his accounting records.

“Plus I went crazy at Vendormart. I bought four times as much inventory as I should have. Nowadays the franchise pairs successful stores and newbies so that doesn’t happen, but those safeguards weren’t in place back then.”

In September Bob’s store will celebrate its tenth anniversary. It has been recognized three times among the Top 30 Most-Improved stores. In February and June of this year his store was number 2 out of 320 in overall sales.

Carl was advised that he’d know if the restaurant would make it within four years. It was clear after three that they’d be fine. Today after seven years they’re looking to expand.

“We’re not getting rich but we’re self-supporting, and the relationships are priceless.”

What advice do they have in hindsight for Dean and others like him?

Bob says, “Find what you love and create your opportunity. Be willing to change-be retooled. Don’t get stuck in a rut. And you gotta have another source of income when you’re starting.”

Carl adds, “We grossly underestimated the working capital we’d need. And if I had it to do over I’d own the building. There are improvements I’d like to make but I’m restricted by the landlord.”

So back to Dean, who’s looking at buying an existing restaurant business, if he doesn’t decide to return to marketing. Where do you want to be in a year? What will you say when I check back with you?

“I made the right choice. I’m doing exactly what I should and I’m excited about it.

How To Leave Your Dead End Job

This is for everyone who is sticking with a job that no longer fits. Maybe it was right for awhile, for a certain time and place in your life. But not anymore. When was the last time you jumped out of bed with excitement about what the day would bring?

“But I love the people I work with.”
“It’s so convenient.”
“The money’s pretty decent, considering… ”

I’ve heard all the excuses. Hell, I’ve made them. You know that job is sucking your soul and it’s time to leave. The only thing left to decide is how.

Above all, you want it to be your decision. Don’t let boredom and apathy lead to an attitude that gets you fired or passed over. Who wants to work with a burnout no matter how skilled they are?

The number one reason people stay in bad jobs is fear of the unknown. Are you hanging on to something that doesn’t fit just because it’s familiar? What if the unknown wasn’t scary? What if it was filled with joy and delightful possibilities? Sure, there’s that transition period where you leave what you can do in your sleep and head into new territory. I assure you that the downhill slide of staying too long is far greater than the steepness of a little learning curve. How might you make unknown territory more comfortable?

1. Make It Known
Learn about it. Do research. Talk to people. Do informational interviews. Volunteer, be a trainee. Find ways to educate yourself. Go to school. Hire a trainer. Shine some light on the stuff the scary ignorance and it’s no big deal. If you’re drawn to it you probably have a knack.

2. Make It Up
There are a lot of successful people in the world who just decide that they know what they’re doing. I’ll never forget my friend Susan, a beautiful and confident woman who discovered her gift for public speaking in Toastmaster’s and went on to become a highly paid consultant just because she decided she was worth listening to. I had just finished grad school and was trying to get my nerve up to go pitch companies. She read a book or two, made a presentation, and was suddenly crossing the country getting big fees. There’s a lot to be said for chutzpah.

3. Try It On A Small Scale
Part-time or pilot projects work well particularly if you’re thinking of venturing out on your own. The hours are long when you don’t give up your day job but if you’re pursuing your passion you generally can find the energy. Cater a friend’s party for the cost of the supplies. Print some business cards on your computer. Do some pro bono work for a civic group for the testimonials. Before long you’ll feel ready to go for it.

4. Dive In
This is my favorite. I get enormous energy from leaping off metaphorical cliffs. Instead of screaming “NO”, try saying “Wheee!” or “Geronimo.” I’ve crossed the country on three occasions with no job and no place to live. I keep having soft, successful landings so I keep leaping. Sometimes it takes a geographic change to get yourself out of a rut. Try something out there and see if you can fly.

5. Be Prepared
So maybe you’re not a leaper. You can plan for contingencies, save that nest egg. Find an answer for all the what-ifs. But be careful not to over prepare. Just how likely are those eventualities that you’re covering? There comes a point when it’s time to take steps.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now”.

Remember, if you only do what you already know how to do your world would get pretty stale. Growth is an essential part of life. There comes a time to move on. You can feel when change is due. When that time comes the universe makes it easy for you. The money for graduate school appears, child care arrangements work out, an article about a new company catches your eye. Pay attention to the signals. Then trust your judgment. If something tells you this new opportunity is right, it probably is.

Kiss the Ring: Hierarchy Matters (It’s not what you think)

Someone once asked a Washington insider how to deal with important people whom you can’t stand. His reply? “You put on your respectful face and you don’t blink.” This strategy is known in business circles as “kissing the ring.” Its origins lie in a much earlier era, when royalty and clerics wore rings of office denoting their status. Bowing your head as you kissed their rings was how you showed respect for their office, while not necessarily feeling that sentiment towards the characters themselves.

Why go to the trouble to show deference to someone you don’t personally like or respect? In the cut and thrust world of business, as in the political sphere, it’s all about survival. Or, to look at it more positively, enlightened self-interest. Like it or not, the business world is structured by a strong sense of hierarchy. Why else would we be so fixated on gaining promotions and better titles? Those high up can have a significant impact upon your reputation and career: positive if they like you and see you playing by the rules, negative if they feel slighted by you in some way. Showing them the appropriate respect helps keep your career path obstacle free.

“Kissing the ring” might mean responding in a neutral to positive way when someone important says something off base in a meeting. Or staying positive with your boss when he or she doesn’t understand what you’re trying to do or say. However irritated or amazed you feel, keep your facial expression kind and free of negativity, a kind of poker face. It’s worth practicing this in front of the mirror so that it’s ready to put on when you need it.

“Kissing the ring” doesn’t mean being sycophantic though. It’s just about treading carefully around egos. There’s nothing wrong with telling a senior person that you think there might be a better way of doing things, but just make sure that you think strategically and don’t react there and then, especially if there are others present. If you are genuinely concerned about something you might want to bring it up in private in a neutral way but not make a big deal out of it. You do this by talking about it in a low-key way, tactfully introducing your point by saying, “By the way, what do you think of… ” or, “Is there is a case to be made for this other point of view?”

Are there “don’t kiss the ring” moments too? You bet. As soon as anything looks the slightest bit immoral or illegal you need to stop and think. Don’t jump to conclusions, but once you’ve confirmed that something improper is up, do everything you can to extricate yourself from the situation before you get into trouble. If, for example, your company requires that the highest level person at a dinner should pick up the expenses then you might hesitate before paying for something so that your boss doesn’t have to put it on his or her expense report. While illegality is something that you should always report, without exception. There are ex-employees of Enron or Health South, currently in jail, who probably wish they had spoken up, or even left their jobs, rather than keeping mum.

“Kissing the ring” is one of a repertoire of respectful behaviors that will serve you in good stead with high ranking people. At some point in your career you will have to suck in your gut and show deference to a senior person whom you can’t stand. Be prepared for it.

The work at home industry is booming with a diverse lot of income earning opportunities. People of all skill and education levels can find a niche in this market. And the driving force that allows such an option is the Internet.

Internet technology has enabled former office rats to do their work at home. Armed with a computer, fax, and telephone, employees from back office data entry to management staff are able to perform part or all of their jobs at home. The telecommuting option is appreciated by workers as it allows them more freedom and control over the work day and more time to spend with families. Many online merchants are working out of their homes. The Internet offers a wealth of opportunities for writers to earn a living at the keyboard. People with an Internet-based career often start on a part-time basis while working their regular office gig. Once their “web job” takes off, they escape the office grind for full-time work at home.

Home Base

Another option in the work at home industry is a home-based business where you go out in the field to provide services for customers. This is a wide open opportunity - think of any product or service that people need and, viola, you have a business. Again, with the Internet, advertising for your home business is no longer a burden. For example, the senior population is exploding. Start an elder service that helps seniors with light housekeeping, grooming, and transportation. Two career families and busy folks in general equal a business for you running errands such as shopping, chauffeuring kids, and picking up dry cleaning.

You can strike out on your own with these home-based businesses or buy a franchise. Franchises offer a brand name people know and trust along with marketing support from the headquarters office. Start up costs can be out of reach for a lot of people, however, there are hundreds of franchise options in the work at home industry that will fit with small budgets.

Scam Alert

The Internet and print and broadcast media are full of ads for great-sounding work at home opportunities. Sadly, the work at home industry is full of scam companies that advertise high income home-based jobs. Some ads are specific while others are vague and keep you in the dark about the exact nature of the pie in the sky venture.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do your research before you plunge into any work at home opportunity. Talk with others who are working at home. Check out franchises or Internet opportunities with the Better Business Bureau. Despite the scam artists, there are thousands of options in the work at home industry and one of them will suit you.

Committed to Nothing

My uncle recently retired from a large manufacturing company after 40 years of service! This is no doubt a great accomplishment, and I congratulate him for this achievement. However it really does cause me to wonder. Could I ever work for the same company for 40 years?

Let’s just put this into perspective.

My uncle retired in 2006 which means he started working in 1966. Let’s put this in modern terms. I graduated from college in 2003 and was very fortunate to land a job at a great company in December of 2002 before I graduated. If I were to stay with my current company for 40 years I would retire in the year 2042. Needless to say I would be vested in my 401k and probably have about 200 vacation days. Is it very likely for me to stay with my current company for 40 years? No. Does my employer know that this not a very likely scenario? Yes.

Isn’t it true that today’s young people do not even consider finding a job out of college or high school and staying with that company until retirement? I know I sure don’t. Our priorities have changed; our outlook on work has changed drastically. When my uncle graduated from high school to go to work, work was something quite different than it is today. Then it was a means to an end, it was a necessity. You went to work did your time and came home, end of story. Then after 40 years you retired with a sweet pension plan and Social Security. Today that simply isn’t the case, is it? Work is something more than eight hours a day five days a week. It is a piece of the total person. It is a slice of who we are. It speaks about what type of person we are and how we want to be identified. For many, work has become who they are. They do not work because they have to they work because they want to. This is especially true for the self-employed. And I am not only talking about the sacrifice of our thumbs to the almighty Blackberry’s and Treos.

Not only has perceptions of work changed but the type of work has drastically changed. When my uncle started his career in 1966 most everyone worked in some type of manufacturing or factory facility. The type of work was very repetitious and blue collar. Please don’t think I am demeaning that type of work because it is still very necessary to our country. However, the need for thousands and thousands of factory workers is not there any more. We still do need some “factory” workers but even those who work in manufacturing today are very skilled workers. The need for general labors is not nearly as high as the need for engineers and technicians of all types.

Since the perception of work and the type of work has changed the attitude of the employee has changed. Employees do not feel as committed to their company for a variety of reasons which we will briefly mention today:

Commitment as a whole across society has waned drastically (i.e. the United States divorce rate of over 50%).

Students are told from a young age that the world is their’s for the taking. Upon graduation they feel like there is so much to accomplish and so little time. In order to conquer the world you really can’t stay at the same company for 40 years can you?

The “grass is always greener” syndrome has increased greatly over the past 50 years to cause a feeling of discontent across of the country. Discontent will not allow you to stay at the same company for 40 years.

Since white collar jobs are not usually repetitious like blue collar jobs, you would think employees would stay longer because they are always working on something new. That isn’t the case though. In some industries turn over is as high as 90%.

One other issue we must not forget is that percentage of the workforce who is fired from their employer because of certain choices they have made. Those workers striving for the 40 year certificate of service may want to think carefully about the actions they take on the job so they do not jeopardize their shot at having a long and successful career.

Another major reality in the 21st century job market is the volatility of corporate America. The cold hard truth is that business is moving much faster than it was in 1966. Jobs come and go, companies come and go, and products come and go at an accelerated pace. What this means for the workforce is more change. In my book “The 7 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Graduated,” I talk about this very issue. Those who aren’t afraid to change will never be unemployed.

Working toward retirement is not as sexy as it once was since the world of pensions and social security is no longer a possibility for workers in their 20s.

My uncle worked hard during his 40 years, he saw management come and go, he learned new skills, and he stayed valuable to his employer. That is a key that all of us need to take from this article. Weather or not you work for a company 40 years or 4 years you must stay valuable to that company in order for them to keep you around. What value do you bring to the company you work for or will work for? That is the question that the 21st century must continually ask itself in order to stay marketable.
